If you have constently checking your mail box for the CSR News and was wondering what has happended to it! The problem is the editor has been too busy boat racing, vacationing, and just having fun. 4th of July in Marysville
Region 11 celibrated Indenpenence day in Marysville CA at Ellis Lake. This a small lake in town that is the size of a paramutual course in Japan with "dog-leg" in the back strech to make it interesting. On Saturday Allen Sutfin, racing in his home town had problems judging the starts to end up with two goose eggs for a score. The winner was Curt Schlosser, who after selling his boat to Tom Pierce borrowed it back when he learned that Tom could not attend the race. Curt knew that it was the right boat for the tight course. Second went to Mark Tingley followed by David Rudge, John Littlejohn, Darrell Sorensen, Greg Steffen, and JW Myers.
Saturday night the fireworks was great and up close as it was fired off from islands in the lake.
On Sunday it was Greg Steffen in front in the first heat followd by JW Myers, with Allen Sutfin in third. JW grabbed the lead at the start in the second heat followed by Steffen and Sutfin, who were charging hard. JW went into the second turn just a little too hard, the boat made it ok, but ejected JW. First overall went to Greg Steffen with two first with Allen Sutfin second, JW Myers third and Schlosser and Rudge tied in points for fourth. John Littlejohn enjoying his first weekend in a CSR came up a little short on weight when the boats were scaled. (40+ lbs.) He may need to find John Bigjohn to drive the boat.
50th Stock Outboard Nationals
The fastest CSR's in the country gathered at Sunday Lake, Wakefield, MI for the 50th nationals for the class. Pre qalified for the race were: Mike Ross, '97 national champion; Craig Bowman, NE divisional winner; Joe Pater, central divisional winner; Darrell Sorensen, western divisional winner. Two qualifing races were required to fill the remaining eight positions. Winner of the first race was Dwight Maiot, Dwight was running a composite boat that J. W. Myers had for sale, the motor was Bob Wartingers. Mike Ross ending up buying the boat.
The seond race went to Brian Rose. Along with Dwight, Rick Love raced his way into the finals.
It took four tries to get the first heat of the finals in. On the first try it was Dwight Mailot in the water after spinning (he got more than a little help from the boat behind him). Red Flag. Second try, Adam Allen gets airborne, Red Flag. Third try Rick Love in the water after spinning, Red Flag. On the fourth try the heat is finnaly ran, the winner is Joe Pater. The second heat was also won by Joe Pater. Craig Bowman was second.
Eatonville WA
Froleich's records are still intact. Dwight Maliot ran Rob Christensen's boat and won with it, so Dwight bought the outfit. Welcome to the class, Dwight..
Sutherlin OR
The first APBA race at Sutherlin was a success with over 60 entries each day and the pit area packed. Plans are already underway for next year with hopes of adding the swim area for more pit space. Racing started at Cooper Creek Res. when it was new with I. R. C. racing in 1970. CSR had the largest field of any class with 7 boats. Saturday the first three were Darrell Sorensen, Buzz Bannister, and Dave Tonge. Sunday all heats were reduced from four to three laps to save time. The judges stand would have liked to have the CSR's run more laps because the race was so exciting. After the checker flag fell it was Darrell Sorensen, Drew Thompson, and Dave Tonge in the first three spots.
Susiun City
This has to be the shortest race course ever! The race is held in a cove in a yacht harbor. The most popular choice of prop is the stock prop that came with the Yamato 80. The cousre is short, rough, and each heat is 4 1/2 laps. That's because the starting clock is on the left. The spectators love it. Saturdays winner was Darrell Sorensen and Sunday it was Allen Sutfin Jr.
