CSR Largest Class at Lodi

Eight drivers take part in the 65th Annual Lake Lodi race. Lodi's Tim Dwyer was sporting a new paint job on his CSR, this was also his first time in the boat. On Saturday he was out front and in sight of the finish line when he went for a swim. Tsunami the boat had some minor deck damage and only Tim's pride was hurt. Greg Steffen picked up the win with 2nd and 1st place finishes. On Sunday Darrell Sorensen appeared to be the winner of the first heat, but was a little early on the start along with Greg Steffen and David Rudge. Allen Sutfin took the win with 1st and 2nd place finishes.

50th Annual Newberg Race

Largest turnout of boats ever at Newberg. With fireworks, '55-'57 T-Birds and antique outboards on display (some being raced also) and over 100 entries each day the 50th running of the race was a huge success. CSR was in the running for the $200 bonus for the class with the most starters for the weekend. However there was the problem of not everyone racing each day and getting all the boats across the starting line. Nine drivers took part over the weekend. Particapitaton is the key to an outstanding race. What a race we could have had if the other six drivers in attendance with CSRs didn't leave them home in the grange and the two other California drivers who contemplated coming did so.

On Saturday in the first heat it was Greg Steffen followed by Darrell Sorensen. Buzz Bannster was giving Sorensen a challenge for 2nd place until he got a little out of shape in turn two. Second heat provided a great deal of action. J. W. Myers, Greg Steffen and Darrell Sorensen arrived at the first turn together, Sorensen spun out, Steffen and Myers put on a race that many said it was the best of the day. Myers was the winner of the heat, Steffen second, Sorensen had the misfortune of getting swept in to a buoy by the river current when recovering from the spin. He passed three boats to cross the finish line third, but was DQ'd for dislodging the buoy. This was Rob Christensen's first runabout race. The boat he built looks real nice. Both J. W. Myers and Darrell Sorensen took his boat out to show him how the boat is supposed to run. When Rob gets the hang of it he'll be fast!

In Sunday's race the first heat it was Darrell Sorensen, J. W. Myers, Dave Tonge. The second heat went to Myers followed by Steffen, and Sorensen. Allen Thorsen did paint his boat. Now if he will only get numbers on it.

Fun in the Sun at Chowchilla

Donnie Morris wins in his first time out in CSR. A strong field of 8 CSR's and nine drivers ran at Chowchilla. Rick Love was the class of the field, but fell victim to two gun jumps and a pulled kill switch during milling that spoiled his chances to win. On Saturday Donnie Morris timed the start just right as everyone else jumped the gun. In the second heat it was Rick Love the winner followed by Ed "Tito" Smith, and Allen Sutfin. In Sunday's race Rick Love stalled in the milling area, Sutfin, Smith and Dwyer were early at the start. Morris took the win with Darrell Sorensen in second and Tom Pierce third. In the second heat there was more gun jumping with Sutfin Dwyer, Love, Sorensen, and Pierce early. Tito's boat ejected him out of it on the second lap. Overall it was Morris, Schlosser, and Sorensen.

Races in June

Everett WA, Silver Lake. Saturday June 6th.

Always a popular race and is close to Seattle.

Copperopolis CA, Salt Springs Res. June 13th & 14th.

This will be the west coast divisionals for CSR as well as the rest of the stock, mod and J classes. Friday June 12th the lake will be open for testing, the course should be in. Saturday will be the divisionals for CSR, with Sunday a regular points race. The course will be 1 mile + with wide turns, so the drivers with side fins will like this one. On Saturday there will be a special event the "Commodore's Cup". It will be an inflatable race with the commodores of various clubs on the west coast as deck riders. After Saturday's race there will be a taco feed, Jack Terrell will be making the tacos and he makes a killer taco! Camping is available at the site and there are hot showers.

Directions: From the north, take hwy. 4 east from Stockton to Copperopolis, turn left on Rock Creek Road, about 6 miles you will come to a stop sign, continue left on Rock Creek road, it is about two more miles to the lake.

From the south a good short cut is to take "G" or "R"(hwy 59) street east at Merced, they both go to Snelling. 1/4 mile past Snelling turn north on J59, continue north on J59 past hwy 136 and J59 will dead end at hwy 104/120, turn right and about 2 or 3 miles there will be a turn left to Tullock Lake. Continue past Tullock Lake to Copperopolis, cross hyw 4 and you will be on Rock Creek Road. (Merced to Salt Springs Res. 67 miles)

Astoria OR, Cullaby Lake June 27th & 28th. Always a good time on the Oregon Coast. If you don't get enough racing on the lake, you can go to the go-cart track Saturday night. This will also be the PRO divisionls.

Thanks to Rolland Deckert for providing postage for this issue.

Would you like to race at Sutherln Oregon on Labor Day Weekend

Rick Hannon is working on this race, he will be at the divisionals getting your input. Sutherlin is in southern Oregon (just north of Roseburg). The site has excellent water, but needs support from both Washington and northern California to be successful.

Some Observations in 35 Years of Racing

Best Race Course:

Chowchilla, I think that this is the best runabout course we have anywhere.

Worse Race Course:

North Bend, Oregon, early '60s. We raced under the highway 101 bridge that goes across Coos Bay.

Most interesting Saturday night race party:

Newberg 1974, the year streaking was in!

Most memorial Boat Racing characters:

Bob Montoya, Lon Stevens.

Tow vehicle:

Steve & Kit Wilde's '53 Studebaker. The hood was hardly ever on the car to keep it from overheating.

Motor Home:

Ric Montoya's Winnabago, a model built for housing at the worlds fair in Spokane. It finially died a couple years ago.

Trailer:

Ted May's, It wasn't big or fancy but had small windows on the sides so you could see his row of props across the front of the trailer.

Engine paint/finish:

Ted May's 55-H with gold plated cowls.

Driver endurance:

Ted May, 1963 race at Marysville, he ran 8 classes using a combination of 3 boats and 6 motors in the following classes: BU, ARR, BRR, ASH, AH, BH, CH, DH.

Biggest Race:

Tie - Dayton nationals '74 & '75, 835 entries.

Smallest Race:

The first race I watched, 1960 closed course race at Gold Beach, Oregon, the last one also.

Most Spectators:

Green Lake, Seattle WA Best of Boat Racing early '70s. Est. 40,000.
