Winter Nationals

January 17-18

Indio, California

Winter Nationals are scheduled for Indio as originally planned. There was a back up plan for Bakersfield, but SCOA has just received permission from the county for the use of the water so the race is on for Indio. This a very important race to start the season as it is double points towards the national high point championship. Make the extra effort to attend the race to give the CSR class a good start in '98.

C2 ?

The SORC have been getting request from region 6 and 12 drivers to continue the C2 classes. This does not concern CSR on the west coast as we all run together in CSR. In runabout there seams to be no avantage to the 102 and it is not the model of motor determining the winners. If you have any suggestions contact your comissioners. They are Susan Rautenberg, Rick Hannon, Matt Boyes, Darrell Sorensen, and Ernie Dawe.

New boats for '98:

Bill Rucker picked up a new Z Craft at the October Bakersfield race. Brian Williams of Vancouver, WA has a new CSR under construction (Roland Deckert purchased Brian's old boat). Rob Christensen will be joining the class with a new boat he is building. Bill Boyes has a boat under construction for Tim Dwyer. Hopefully Bill will have time to build Matt a boat. Tim Dwyer now has a Yamato 102 so he will be ready for CSR next year. Tim also owns an extended 20 runabout with one of custom paint jobs. Darrell Sorensen is working on something expermental in his shop, if it works you will see it at some of the races, if it doesn't work you may see it on the bon fire at Newberg.

News Letter Goal

The goal of this news letter is to increase interest in C Stock Runabout on the west coast. To have more CSR's racing at each race, more drivers in the class, more competitive races, and more FUN !!

It cost $ for printing and mailing of the news letter. As of now there are 32 on the mailing list and it will surely grow. It cost 12 cents to print each copy and mailing is 32 cents. If the math is right, that's 44 cents a copy. Rick Love and Curt Schlosser are going to sponsor the next two issues at $15 each. Additional sponsors will be needed for additional issues, so get your name on the list. Surely the price will go up to $20 soon as more names are added to the mailing list.

Lake Minden October 11-12

C Stock Runabouts had a good showing at the last race of the year at Lake Minden in region 11. 8 boats in the pits with 7 on the water each day. The wind blew an Saturday making the water rough, but the CSR's handled it just fine. The problem was that most of us were always early for the start. The ones that had it figured out were Lane Hird and David Rudge. Lane in his first runabout race won on Saturday and David Rudge was the only legal starter on Sunday. Over the weekend David scored enough points to capture the 1997 NCOA high points for the class. This race site should be a favorite of the CSR class in the future because of the tight turns and the straightaways are just long enough to get some speed up before the next turn. It is also great for spectator viewing.

Lake Minden results:

10/11/97, (1) Lane Hird 2/5 427 pts. (2) Greg Steffen BG/1 (3:10.93) 400 pts. (3) David Rudge 1/dns (3:27.03) 400 pts. (4) Darrell Sorensen BG/2 300 pts. (5) Dick Rautenberg BG/3 225 pts. (6) Allen Sutfin BG/4 169 pts. Chad Cullins DQ 0 pts. (underweight).

10/12/97, (1) David Rudge 1-400 pts. Allen Sutfin BG 0 pts. Tim Dwyer BG 0 pts. Chad Cullins BG 0 pts. Darrell Sorensen BG 0 pts. Greg Steffen BG 0 pts. Roland Dechert BG 0 pts.

Look for a feature article on Lake Minden with great Roland Deckert pictures in the December "Propeller".

Boat Names

Up through the '50s boat names were real popular. Almost all drivers named their boats. Some used a diferent name on each boat and others used the same name with a II, III, IV was added to the newer boats. Lots of the names were painted real big on the boats so the spectators could see the name during the race. Race programes not only listed the drivers name, home town, boat number, but also the name of the boat.

Trivia: Can you name the drivers that used the following names on their boats?

Black Bart

Chuck Wagon

Cross Wind

Fling Ding

Honey Babe

Honey Comb

Hot Cargo

Lil Man

My Girl

Over Easy

Peat Dust

Snapper

Static

Suicide Sal

Tail Wind

The Fantum

#8985

I started life as a BSR in 1985 Sorensen hull #8985. Well, I was really a 20SSR with a Yamato 80, but some political decisions were made by the SORC to combine 20SSR and BSR. Ray Hoot was my first owner, it was his second year in racing and after thoroughly thrashing his DeSilva he ordered me form Darrell Sorensen. Ray painted my sides white with a natural deck and I looked mighty fine. Ray owned me for just over a year and was just getting to learn how I like to be driven and he sold me so he could buy one of my older sisters that Dean Wilson had for sale. What a blow! now I am an outcast and my new owner is some hippy named Mike Ventry from Santa Cruz. This guy doesn't even have a clue on how I should be driven, only takes me out a couple times and never races me. Fortunately a couple years later I am sold to a new racer, Allen Cordy. Now I am being raced again in a class called B Mod Runabout. Same Yamato 80, just more political stuff. One time Allen doesn't tie me down to the trailer very well and I bounce off on to I-580, ouch! Allen was sorry and fixed me all up again and named me "Road Warrior". He even gave me a new paint job, I was orange and blue and looked good again. Allen built a hydro, those boats that need sponsons to keep right side up in the turns. Now he started to neglect me and I didn't get to race very often. Allen started racing cars, I had to take a back seat to a Pinto for a whole season, he finally took me to the last race of the year at Shadow Cliffs. Boy did I run good and won the race. I was sold at the race and eventually ended up in Fairfield on James Guffy's race team. I was sent back to Darrell Sorensen to be made into a C Runabout. I am now a foot longer, a little thicker, and have a neat looking high cockpit side and cowling. I also get a newer and larger Yamato 102 hung on my transom. Then when I get back to Fairfield I am painted an aqua green, I liked my other colors better! I am given to a new driver on the team that doesn't even know how to get me on plane. He even puts his knee through my deck. Now life goes down hill big time. I get traded off to a hydro driver (Joey Johnson) who only wants me for my engine. Then he gives me to Mike Wilson, who puts a new deck on me, but takes off the beautiful cowl and cockpit side. Mike tries to race me, but he is getting a little old and it is not like when I was new and winning races. After a year of struggling with Mike I am traded back to my builder. The hook is taken out of my bottom and lent to Roy Edmark. Roy keeps promising to race me, but he is more interested in offshore racing. About a year goes by and one day Tim King comes and gets me, paints me a dark blue and races me in a new class called 20SSR. Wasn't that the class that it was before I was built? There is a nice video made at Lodi and we are in it. Then it is back to Darrell Sorensen's for a new cowl and cockpit side. Darrell takes me to next years Lodi race. We don't do well the first heat, but run out front the next heat, jumped the gun but that sure felt good. The next day Terry Klemm races me, we start in front and

work our way to the back. The next time I am raced by Matt Boyes and in your second race we win!! Then I get to go on a trip to region 10. At the dividionals J. W. Myers and I take second place in 20SSR. Then Steve Lytle flips me just after the starting line in CSR. Am I very tore up, some bandages are put on and he races me again the next day. Darrell takes me to Montoya's where he and Jason fix me almost like new. At Olympia I am raced by James Thompson from Alaska. We do well and even win a heat. Back in California Darrell paints me orange, then puts on tiger stripes, a little crude but looks good from a distance. Next Tim Cree and I get to race at Salt Springs. We do well, but run into another boat while milling (more bandages). Darrell races me at Suisun, he thought we won the races, but I missed a buoy. Matt Boyes races me again at Lawrence Lake in Washington, I sure like to travel other regions to race. Back home Curt Schlosser and I are all ready to race at Oroville, but the wind is blowing hard and the drivers are chicken to take us out on the water. Last race of the year at Lake Minden. Lane Hird drives me on Saturday, he is afraid to let me go fast. But we win the race because we didn't jump the gun. On Sunday Tim Dwyer is my driver and we ran in second place. Wow, I sure have had fun this year, nine different drivers, lots of racing and came out the winner a couple times. Next year I will have a new driver, Tom Pierce. Once he learns how I like to be driven, we will be a force to be reckoned with.
