CSR driver killed in avalanche.

James Thompson from Fairbanks Alaska was killed in an avalanche while riding his snowmobile. James last raced at the 1999 SO Divisonals at Oroville CA where he finished 3rd place in the divisionals and 2nd place on Sunday, driving “Tiger”.

Marathon Racing at Sutherlin

As an added feature there was a runabout marathon each day at the Sutherlin OR race. This was the first Stock Outboard Marathon since the mid ‘70s when the Sammamish Slough race ended. The field included both A and C Stock Runabouts. The races were 15 minutes, with beach starts. The A runabouts were given the best line to the first turn so they could have clean water at first. It was a lot of fun to be passing the A boats all the time (not sure that they enjoyed it as much). Jeff Bernard was king of the A boats. Curt Schlosser won C on Saturday. On Sunday Curt offered his boat to Darrell Sorensen for the marathon, since Darrell was having motor problems all weekend. Darrell also won C with the boat on Sunday.

How to fuel a marathon CSR? One way is to use a transfer pump to keep the gravity feed tank on the motor full. The crankcase can be taped for a fuel pump or an electric pump can also be used. A 2 ” p.c.v. pipe cap with 1/8” pipe fittings works as a cap on the engine tank. At Sutherlin a couple boats used a squeeze bulb pump in the fuel line taped to the steering wheel. This worked will for the short marathon, you just bushed on the squeeze bulb several times while going down the straightaway.

More Tiger Tails

Its been awhile since I have had the chance to update you on what has been happening to me. First of all I haven’t been able to race as much as I have liked. If I had my way I would be racing every weekend of the year! But there have been some real bright points. You may have remembered that I made the cover of the Propeller magazine in 1998 with JW Myers driving me at Newberg. Well in December of ‘99 there was a whole feature article about me and all my drivers in the Propeller. There were six different pictures of me in the article. You never know what will happen when a photographer / writher gets a chance to race the “Tiger”.

In 1999 my owner had some problem with his eyes and couldn’t get me to hardly any races. But at the end of the season I did get to race at Pleasanton with Roland Dechert and newcomer Brian Vincent. Brian had so much fun that he went out and bought his own C Stock Runabout.

2000 was a little slow also. I got to race a Marysville only because Curt Schlosser could never get his boat painted, so I got to play once again. Then my ol’ buddy JW, who had be racing Unlimited Lights , a big boat with training wheels and a big car engine in it, wanted to do some real racing for a change. Well we raced at Shadow Cliffs, and did we ever race! We raced in every class the officials would let us enter. Besides CSR we were racing in OSY 400, FE and 350cc Runabout. We used those other class to “dial in the start” for CSR. Even though we jumped the start by just a small amount we could hold off those fast 350 runabouts for a whole lap, boy that felt good. In OSY 400 we beat more hydros than the ones that beat us! On Sunday in CSR we were the class of the 11 boat field, out front both heats. But a slight miscalculation at the start of heat two (jumped the gun) dropped us to second, still not bad.

The race was being filmed for Speedvision because it was the Cracker Box Nationals (big runabouts that bounce around a lot with two people in them powered by car engines, ) . Well here we were shown on national TV out in front and look' in good.

What’s up for next season? Even though my skin has a few wrinkles and cracks, my paint is a little faded, my bottom is true and fast. Just bring your motor and we’ll go racing.
