C Stock Runabout “Challenge Race”
Slated for the Divisionals
At the Stock Outboard Divisionals, Astoria Oregon on Cullaby Lake, June 24 & 25 there will be a C Stock Runabout “Challenge” race for a REAL nice set of trophies. Drivers who placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the divisionals will not be eligible to enter the race. The race will be a 3 lap dash to be held after the divisional results are determined
Region 11’s season started at Grass Valley April 29-30. George Scott built a new boat for the season, but didn’t have time to get it painted so he took “Tsunami” out for one last race. We’re not sure exactly what happened, hit something in the water, boat just broke or it was the Rollins Lake monster. The results was a lot of wood all over the place just after the starting line. Instead of bringing the remains to Newberg, George cut a couple feet of the bow for a trophy and gave the boat an “Italian funereal” (crushing the remains in one of the garbage trucks that he maintains at work).
Oroville May 13. A good field of CSRs showed up. Including Denny Paola, making the trip from Oregon, Greg Steffen, Allen Sutfin Jr., John Littlejohn, Darrell Sorensen, George Scott (new Boat), Matt Boyes has acquired Bud Coberly’s rig. In the first heat Darrell Sorensen got a little too much “air” going into a turn, he ended up in the water but his boat did come down right side up. The heat was flagged and on the restart everyone but George Scott jumped the gun. In the second heat Matt Boyes spun in front of Sorensen in the first turn. Sorensen’s boat flew over the top of Matt’s boat. Very fortunately no one was injured, Matt’s boat only had minor damage from a fin slice and Darrell’s boat, motor & prop had zero damage! Darrell’s remark was that he did read an article in an old “Boat Sport” magazine on how to set up a boat for jumping, the first thing to do is remove the fin. Congratulations to George Scott on winning his first race. Sundays race was cancelled due to some heavy weather coming in.
Chowchilla June 3-4. The field of C Runabouts was disappointing, with only four boats showing up. Weather and water conditions were ideal. New CSR driver Brian Vincent is starting to show some real speed with his boat, he just needs some more experience.
Upcoming races: June 17-18 Copperopolis CA
June 17-18 Winlock WA
June 24-25 Astoria OR Divisionals / CSR Challenge
July 1-2 Marysville CA
July 8-9 Olympia WA
Northwest Report by Jim Sturgul
Harrison Bay, B.C., Canada
Saturday May 20
.Denny Paola was out in front going into the last lap when, what appeared to be a combination of a gust of wind and a hidden roller caused him to abandon ship into the frigid glacier waters. Denny was o.k. but his boat landed upright, suffering some light damage.
1st. Jim Strugul, Sr, 2nd Jeff Kelly, 3rd Chris Alloway.
Sunday May 21
Jim Sturgul and Denny Paola collided going into the first turn after the start. Both boats suffered extensive damage. As good sport Denny said, “That’s boat racing”. 1st Jeff Kelly, 2nd Jim Sturgul Sr., 3rd Denny Paola.
Newberg Oregon
Saturday May 27 1st Jim Sturgul, 2nd Denny Paola, 3rd Brian Williams. Sunday May 28 1st Denny Paola, 2nd Jim Sturgul, 3rd Drew Thompson. In the second heat we had the classic gun jumping scenario—– with the cagey Mr. Paola driving with his head, taking the win.
Overall CSR racing is getting off to a great start here in the northwest this season. It is expected that the race coming up I Everett on June 3rd will see a growing list of entries. Jimmy Strugul Jr., should be up and running in his semi-finished Sorensen;…..we should see the likes of Rick Montoya and Buzzzzz Bannister making their season debut.
Everett Washington June 3
The weather was perfect. The race cause was ideal. We even had a nice spectator crowd! The CSR’s were combined with the 25SS Runabouts so a full field of boats answered the 3 minute gun. 1st Jeff Kelly, 2nd Drew Thompson, 3rd Chris Alloway, 4th Jim Sturgul.
Now on to Winlock, WA on the 17th & 18th. By the way we’ll be able to test (what’s that) on the 16th (Friday) for a fee of course, since the club is springing for the extra insurance, etc.
