Sutherlin CSR Alloway Wins the Challange

Chris Alloway with precision starting skills, that would qualify him to race in the Japanese Para mutual circuit, won the Sutherlin CSR challenge Sept. 4-5. Eight C Stock Runabouts took the challenge, Rolland Deckert, Chris Alloway, Dave Tonge, Curt Schlosser, Darrell Sorensen, Drew Thompson, Buzz Banister, and Denny Paola) with a broken boat and stubborn motor only seven made the final call on Sunday. In Saturdays race Buzz Banister lead the first heat, but after review of the video was reviewed Buzz jumped the gun giving the win to Alloway. The second heat Alloway got another great start with Banister in second with Sorensen in hot pursuit. In the last turn Banister hooked the outside chine of his flat turning boat and flipped. The first three overall were, Alloway, Sorensen, and Schlosser.

On Sunday Drew Thompson and Rolland Deckert were added to the entry list, Buzz Banister boat was damaged and Dave Tong had motor problems. So Banister put his motor on Tongs boat and drove it in the race. The first heat Alloway nailed the start again and after a couple laps Sorensen was able to get around to take the lead. In the final heat Alloway again took the start with Paola finishing 2nd and Sorensen 3rd. Results Alloway, Sorensen, Paola.

This race has great community support with sponsorship from the Lions Club. The mayor of Sutherlin was co-chairman of the race and the city manager worked both days driving his bass boat for use by the turn judges. Lots of signs advertising the race. There were many more spectators than last year and the Lions Club was running out of food late Sunday. This race needs more driver support to become a great race. CSR again had the most entries, our class could easily double in entries and run 2 qualifying heat / last chance / final format. Sutherlin in a super place to be on Labor Day weekend . Mark you calendar for Sept. 2-3, 2000.

Flag Starts at Isleton

As Isleton was one of the Mod races that was using the clock/flag start combo, it was decided to use this format for all classes on Saturday. The flag starts were so successful that the starting clock was taken down for Sunday’s race and just flag starts were used. Unfortunately most of the racing was blown out, including C Stock Runabout.

Howard Aarnison did show up with his 48’, 4000 hp flame throwing turbine powered offshore boat . This boat has been up to 175 mph, he made a pass through the course at a more conservative speed. The Cracker Boxes have made a come back in Region 11 and put on a great show with 7 boats taking part. In Saturdays CSR race Darrell Sorensen won the clock start heat, that meant he had to start on the outside as pace boat in the second heat. Denny Paola grabbed the lead in that heat but Sorensen took over on the second lap.

Large Field of CSRs at Yelm,Washington

A field of 13 C Stock Runabouts entered at Lawrence Lake on Saturday 9/18. This was the first time that a field over the 12 boat limit had entered a Stock Outboard Runabout race on the west coast (other than nationals) in 30 years. We were also the largest class at this well attended race. More new CSR drivers; Bart Loveral ran well in the race. Jim Sturgul’s son entered his boat in CMR & liked it. Looks like Jim will be building a new boat for himself and his son will take over the present boat for next year. More on this race in the next issue.

Big News for 2000,

Grants Pass, Oregon

C Stock Runabout is being invited to Grants Pass, Oregon on May 29th (Monday-Memorial Day) as a support class for the Boatnik hydro white water race. Don’t worry we won’t be racing over any riffles. We will be racing on the Rogue river at the park in Grants Pass, for a huge throng of spectators, while the marathon hydros are down stream. This race draws more spectators than any other boat race on the west coast except unlimited. I attended this race 2 years ago and it makes the DePue PRO nationals look small. Check out www.boatnik.com.

There will be $100 tow money for each boat entered, no entry fee. There should also be at least $200-300 prize money. The race will be APBA sanctioned with points. Also a prize fund for the most points between Newberg and Grants Pass is being set up. Why were we invited? We have the numbers and always put on a good show!
