Who Will Win the C.S.R Title
The nationals for C Stock Runabout will be at Lake Ming near Bakersfield July 26-31. Can you pick who will be the winner? If you can there are some nice prizes up for grabs.
Entry fee paid for the Sutherlin Oregon CSR race on September 5th. (Sponsored by Denny Paola)
2. 8x10 photo of you in your CSR (sponsored by Rolland Deckert)
3. $10 of gas for your CSR tow vehicle at the Sutherlin Oregon race. (sponsor Curt Schlosser).
To enter make a list of who you think will win the ‘99 nationals. You can pick up to 20 drivers. Entries must be turned in the evening of the drivers meeting at the nationals. If you can not attend the nationals you can mail you entry to the address on CSR News. Just be sure we receive it by July 23rd.
After the final 12 are set the names of the drivers who did not make the finals will be scratched off your list. Remaining names will be moved up in position.
All list will be compared with the final results. Should there be a tie selecting the winner (more than one have it right or none have it right) then it will drop to the second name in the list. And so on. Ties for first place will be broken by selecting the second place finisher.
You do not have to attend the nationals to enter, but you have to attend the Sutherlin race to receive the 1st or 3rd place prized. For the photo you must race a CSR at a race that Roland is taking pictures in ‘99.
The winner will get the 1st choice of prize.
Enclosed is a list of ‘98 and ‘99 drivers for reference
Denny Paola Starts His 2nd CSR Campaign
After 35 years motors have changed, boats have changed, safety equipment has changed. Denny Paola has not changed, he started just were he left off. He was in the top five in national high points in 1961 and he is now 3rd in national high points in 1999. In his first race at Grass Valley, CA Denny was 2nd on Saturday and on Sunday he took back to back wins.
Results: 4/24 1 Greg Steffen 1-1, 2 Denny Paola 3-2, 2 Allen Sutfin Jr. 2-3, 4th John Littlejohn 4-4, Dwight Malhior flip-dns, Rick Love bg-dqc.
4/25 1 Denny Paola 1.1, 2 Greg Steffen 3-2, 3 John Littlejohn 4-3, 4 Allen Sutfin Jr. 2-dns, 5 Dwight Malhiot 5-dns.
CSR Divisionals at Oroville
The month of May had been unusually windy in northern California, when I was driving to the race I would have placed bets that we would not have been racing. I even had an alternate plan to attend an antique meet at Grass Valley. To my surprise Testing was going on when I arrived at the race site. Saturday the water was on the rough side, Sunday was even nice.
Not making mistakes and a little luck are keys to winning races. Mistakes made: Curt Schlosser was moving through the field, then drove too aggressive into the second turn and a roller left from milling ejected him. In inspection Rick Love’s prop shaft was a fraction of an inch too high, Ric Montoya was couple pounds too light, and Greg Steffen found out that he is responsible for legality of his motor, not the previous owner. The eventual winner was Allen Sutfin Jr. Just to show every one that his win wasn’t a fluke, Allen came back to win Sunday’s race
.C Stock Runabout drivers should be thankful that Steven Dawe doesn’t run the class. Steven picked up wins in A Stock Runabout, 20SS Hydro, and C Stock Hydro. James Thompson came all the way from Alaska to drive “Tiger” and went home with 2nd & 3rd place trophies.
Saturday Divisional
1 Allen Sutfin Jr., 2 Matt Boyes, 3 James Thompson, 4 Denny Paola, 5 Ric Montoya, 6 John Littlejohn, 7 Dwight Malhiot, 8 Rick Love, Curt Schlosser DNF, Greg Steffen DQT.
Sunday
1 Allen Sutfin Jr., 2 James Thompson, 3 Ric Montoya, 4 Denny Paola, 5 David Rudge, 6 John Littlejohn, 7 Dwight Malhiot, Matt Boyes BG, Greg Steffen DQT.
Hot Racing at Newberg By, Brian Williams
The weather was hot at Newberg, a change from years past. Denny Paola, Drew Thompson, Dave Tong, John Littlejohn, Roland Deckert, and I come out to challenge the rough river course. On Saturday we got on the water around 6 pm; however, we were back on the beach within minutes. All of us jumped the gun, and due to time constraints that was it for the CSR’s. Sunday proved to be more exciting. Right at the start of the first, Drew Thompson crashed in front of Denny Paola. Drew signaled he was ok, but the race was black flagged when John Littlejohn went in with kill switch problems. Drew’s new boat suffered heavy damage to the deck and left side. Denny’s boat had minor damage to its right chine. The heat was rerun with Denny Paola leading wire to wire for the win, followed by Tong, myself, and Deckert. Littlejohn to last place with continued kill switch problems. Denny Paola again won heat two, but the best race of the day was between Dave Tong and John Littlejohn. They raced side by side for all three laps. I saw all the action from about two to three lengths behind them. That was until the final corner when my boat decided it was going to perform an inverted buoyancy test, with or without me. Oh well, no damage done and I got to meet some fine people with Oregon race rescue. Dave Tong won out with Roland Deckert bringing up the rear.

4th of July Fireworks
Ellis Lake is a small lake in Marysville, CA. The course is tight, you even mill around an island. The fireworks display on the 4th is absolutely spectacular. There is fireworks set to go off on the milling island and near the judges stand. This is a race you must attend even if it is only for the fireworks display.
Allen Sutfin Jr. is the master at the short rough courses and won both days.
Capital Lake Regatta
Huge turnout at Capital Lake, Over 160 entries on Saturday and 140 on Sunday. The race committee got all of the heats ran. Saturday Buzz Banister and Ric Montoya split heat with Banister winning on time. Sunday Ric Montoya and Denny Paola had a good battle with some paint trading, This time Montoya was victorious. Buzz Banister did not have a good time on Sunday as he went for a “bath”.
A welcome to another new driver to C Stock Runabout, Jim Sturgul.
Winlock Waters
Winlock Waters is a water ski lake 2300 feet X 240 feet. The shore has a 10-to-1 slope so wakes dissipate rapidly.
Initially it was decided, because of the short turn radius, to run four boat heats. The racing itself was a little tentative at first, as racers felt their way around the course This was a great course for runabouts, and a bit of a puzzle for the hydro drivers. D-Mod Hydro driver Mark Allen drove his lay-down hydro up on the beach in the first turn and flying out of the boat to quickly bounce up with an “I’m OK” signal. Several boats were seen to negotiate the south turn flinging clods of clay and the occasional stone up with the roostertail. Dave Tong used skill and a large hammer to straighten an oddly shaped skeg caused from and excursion on the beach.
The runabouts make every heat a show, especially the C/20ss racers who seem to have grown huge as a class over the past couple years…”Shows what happens”, commented John Myers, “when a manufacturer will actually sell you a motor.”
All in all, the event turned out to be quite a show, and has some interesting future potential.
Saturday

Sunday

Salty Seas Days Regatta
If there’s anything to all the hooha and fear mongering about global warming, the weather for Silver Lake’s local opener sure didn’t provide much support for the argument. Throughout the day racers were treated to everything from “almost “sunshine to downpours, with the occasional hint of wind. Actually that part wasn’t so bad and it was never a factor in the racing. On the other hand, the temperature was unseasonably low...So low that dipping a hand into the lake felt downright warm.
In C Stock Runabout Buzz Bannister put up a brace of heat wins to win overall.

What’s Up With CSR News
You may have wondered what happened to CSR News? In late April the hard drive in my computer started making unusual noises, next thing I knew it wouldn’t work! However it was still under warranty by two days. It took about 45 days to get it back. I would like to thank Matt Boyes for his help in getting the programs up and running again. He is always loading new stuff in it, like this news letter format. Since I am just learning how to use it, it may be little rough this issue.
If you wonder what’s up with my eyes. I had cataract surgery on my left eye on June 23rd—what a difference!! The big thing is that colors are much more vivid. My plans are to race at the nationals. Darrell
Authors needed. I would like to thank Brian Williams for the Newberg story. Just jot down a few lines on the next CSR race and mail to me. It doesn’t need to be fancy, as long as the facts are there.
New boats that have been on the water: Brian Williams, Drew Thompson and Andy Schwenk, each have built their own boats. Denny Paola and Curt Schlosser have new boats.
Four complete C Runabout kits are in Spokane WA to be built.
A welcome to George Scott and Jim Sturgul. George ran his CSR race at Salt Springs. His previous racing has been in Offshore. Jim make his CSR start at the Capital Lake
