Races Coming Up

April 24-25

Rollins Lake – Grass Valley CA

This is an excellent runabout course in a beautiful mountain setting. If you like to camp, camping is available, or there are motels close by in Grass Valley. There is also a store on site for those last minute things you have forgotten. Denny Paloa will be making his comeback to CSR after 35+ years at this race. CSR’s Greg Steffen is race director.

May 15-16

SO Divisionals – Oroville CA

With the nationals at Bakersfield this year, the divisionals is a must race. The winner will be automatically qualified for the finals at the nationals. This will be a wide – fast course.

Divisionals Date Change:

The date of the SO Divisionals at Oroville, CA has been moved up one week due to graduation at Chico State College on the original date and motels being at a premium. The new date is May 15-16.

May 29-30   Newberg, Oregon

Newberg Boat Club extends a sincere invitation for everyone to help them celebrate our “last race of the 20th century”. It was great last year, even with the rain. It could be even greater in the sunshine.

Region 11 Schedule Cards

Region ll schedule cards are finally printed. This year the picture features the CSR’s of JW Myers and Greg Steffen. The photo was taken by Teri Ziemer at the Marysville, CA race last year. You should have a few enclosed with your news letter.

Sorensen out of CSR for part of Season

Darrell Sorensen will have to miss part of the season because of a problem with one eye. On St. Patrick’s Day their was an interruption of blood to the retina of one eye that caused partial blindness to that eye (no, it was not the green beer that caused it). Since then the vision in that eye as returned some. To compound the problem there are cataracts in both eyes. After cataract surgery is performed, hopefully things will be back to almost normal. In the meantime I just tell everyone that I am blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other. I have been nicked named things like “Mr. McGoo”. My depth perception seems to be ok, can still beat my son in ping pong (can’t wait to take on Debbie at Salt Springs). Just watch out, when I get the cataracts fixed, I just might be able to actually see the clock.

Math Quiz

(Calculator may by used)

1.      First of all, pick the number of days a week that you would like to race your C Stock Runabout..

2.      Multiply this number by 2.

3.      Add 5.

4.      Multiply it by 50.

5.      If you have already had your birthday this year add 1749. If you haven’t, add 1748.

6.      Last step: Subtract the four-digit year that you were born.

You should now have a three-digit number. The first digit is this was your original number (i.e. how many times you want to race a week). The second two digits are your age!

This is the only year 1999 it will ever work, so spread the fun around while it lasts…

A True Story

Last summer, on Lake Isabelle, an hour east of Bakersfield, a blonde, new to boating, was having a problem. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t get her brand new 22-ft Bayliner to perform. It wouldn’t get on a plane at all, and it was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power she applied.

After about an hour of trying to make it go, she putted over to a nearby marina. Maybe they could tell her what was wrong.

A through topside check revealed everything was in perfect working order. The engine ran fine, the outdrive went up and down, the prop was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina attendants jumped in the water to check underneath. He came up choking on water, he was laughing so hard.

Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer.

Boats

George Scott, Pittsburg, CA has purchased a Yamato 302 and a set of plans to build a CSR.

John Littlejohn 69-C, Yuba City, CA has re-decked his boat (rumor has it that it looks like a Kirer).  It is now painted and ready to go.

Denny Paola 88-R. Hillsboro, OR has his new boat finished and is looking forward to his first race at Grass Valley

Andy Schwenk, Monroe, WA has his CSR almost finished and hopes to race at the Divisionals at Oroville.

Curt Schlosser 15-C, Turlock, CA has his new CSR painted and ready to race.

David Rudge 183-C, Yuba City, CA has some new skins on his boat and a new paint job.

Brian Williams, Vancouver, WA has his new boat painted (each side is a different color) and will be at Newberg.

 “Fast” Rac’in

Anyone who had done the leg-work to put on a race, especially the first time for a race site knows how much red-tape there is dealing with government agencies. In 1976 Oregon Speedboat Association (now Columbia Outboard Racing Association) set a record, that surely that no one has equaled. From first sighting the water to the first heat - 5  Hours.

OSA was going to have a “slough race” on a slough in Portland Oregon. This slough crosses I-5 near the horse race track and flows west to the Willimatte River. The Port of Portland wanted to build a bridge near the mouth, the cheep way with a culvert. The property owners were up in arms because they would not be able to navigate the slough. They sponsored a slough race to bring attention to the problem they were having with the Port of Portland. The weekend before the race was spent clearing dead-heads from the slough and marking anything what wouldn’t move. Two days before the race the Port threatened to sue, they contended that the race boat wakes would erode the banks of the slough. Dixie Sims suggested that instead of trying to hold the slough race we could race along with the inboards at Swan Island in the Willimatte River.

On arrival early Saturday morning, just one look at the river, anyone could see that it was not race-able for outboards. However across the street there was a small lake (pond), so we setout to see if we could race on it. A call was made to the State Marine Board, fortunately we were able to contact someone who could give us the authority to hold the race. A sign was posted at the slough pit to instruct the racers to the new location. Since we were going to use a beach start for the slough race and didn’t have a clock, we used a flag start. The races were underway by 11 a.m.

Many of the drivers were prepared for a slough race, so it made for an interesting short course race. Robert Waite stole the show with his cab-over hydro and Quincy Looper. The $500 sponsorship money went for prize money and everyone went home happy.

The inboards never did get to race, as the river was too rough for even them.

Another Contest Coming

There will be a “Pick the Champion” contest this summer. your entry will be a list of 20 C Stock Runabout drivers that you (starting from the top) think that are most likely to win the nationals at Bakersfield. After elimination races all drivers that did not qualify will be scratched off your list. Then if the driver who is on top of you list wins, you are eligible to win. Getting the second place in the correct order and so on will break ties. Complete rules will be in the next issue.
